Saving Teen Lives Through
Smarter Driving Decisions

The DriveSafe Initiative

What is The DriveSafe Initiative?

The DriveSafe Initiative reduces risky behavior in teen drivers by providing immediate feedback, accountability, and targeted ongoing education. The program uses AI cameras to give in-cab instructions, creates coaching moments for parents and their children, and plays back videos of driver behavior along with targeted training to emphasize why the risky behavior must be avoided.

Once teens have their license, they face real-world risks without real-time guidance or parental accountability. The DriveSafe Initiative steps in to keep them safer during those unsupervised, everyday driving moments.

How it Works

Real-Time Driving Alerts.
Parental Support. Smarter Driving Habits.

  1. AI-Powered Safety Alerts
Cameras spot risky driving—speeding, phone use, tailgating, and more—and give instant voice prompts: “Slow down,” “Fasten Seatbelt,” or “Keep a safe distance.”

  2. Parental Accountability
Ignored alerts? A video is sent to parents so they can guide teens toward safer choices—reinforcing responsibility and confidence behind the wheel.

  3. Personalized Learning
Short, interactive videos and quizzes adapt to each teen’s driving habits, building smarter, safer drivers over time.

Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens over 16. Decisions—not ability—are the largest driver of fatalities.

Teen drivers represent the highest-risk segment insurers cover. Inexperience, distraction, and risk-taking behaviors make teens significantly more likely to be involved in crashes—many of them preventable.

Newly licensed drivers are more prone to distraction and poor decision-making, increasing the likelihood of severe, preventable crashes. For insurers, these incidents translate into disproportionate claims severity. Addressing just a fraction of high-risk behaviors can produce meaningful reductions in payouts and loss ratios.

DSI Transforms Teen Driver Decision Framework

DSI is built to specifically target development of students’ if/then decision-making process. Instead of trying to enforce the importance of safe driving for a (relatively) highly improbable accident, it provides a short-term and consistent consequence for risky behavior.

Traditional rationale:

“If I drive 9 miles over the speed limit, I’ll get there faster and probably won’t get pulled over.”

The DriveSafe Initiative student rationale:

“If I speed, the car tells me to slow down. If I ignore it, it sends a video to my parents
and we’ll have to talk about it.”

By intervening before risky driving becomes a crash,
DSI helps insurers:

  • Reduce frequency and severity of teen-driver claims

  • Lower long-term risk exposure

  • Demonstrate leadership in community safety

  • Strengthen relationships with policyholders by protecting their teens
